The Physics: How AR Coating Works
Destructive Interference
AR coating works through a principle called destructive interference. The coating is precisely engineered so that these two reflected waves are exactly out of phase with each other — the peak of one wave aligns with the trough of the other.
When two waves that are exactly out of phase combine, they cancel each other out. This is destructive interference. The result: the reflected light is eliminated, and instead of bouncing back, that light passes through the lens to your eye.

Because light consists of many different wavelengths (colours), a single coating layer can only eliminate reflections for one specific wavelength. Premium AR coatings use multiple layers — each precisely calibrated for a different wavelength — to eliminate reflections across the entire visible spectrum. This is why quality AR coatings are described as "multi-layer" or "multi-coat."
The number and precision of these layers determines the quality of the AR coating. Premium coatings may have seven or more layers, each contributing to broader and more complete reflection elimination.
