How to Choose the Best Sunglasses for Driving

The Most Important Features for Driving Sunglasses

UV400 Protection: Non-Negotiable

UV damage to the eyes is cumulative and irreversible, and drivers spend significant time exposed to UV radiation through windscreens.

Note that standard car windscreens block most UVB radiation but allow UVA through. UV400 lenses protect against both.

Polarized Lenses: Highly Recommended

Polarized lenses are arguably the single most valuable upgrade for driving sunglasses. They eliminate horizontal glare from road surfaces, other vehicles, and wet conditions — the type of glare that's most disorienting and dangerous when driving.

The difference is immediately apparent: roads appear clearer, contrast improves dramatically, and visual fatigue is significantly reduced on long drives. For anyone who drives regularly, polarized lenses are worth the investment.

One caveat: polarized lenses can make some LCD displays (GPS units, dashboard screens) appear dark or distorted at certain angles. This is worth being aware of, though most modern vehicle displays are designed to work with polarized lenses.

Lens Colour: Choose Wisely

Lens colour affects how you perceive contrast and colour while driving:

  • Grey/smoke: The best all-round choice for driving. Grey lenses reduce brightness without distorting colour perception, allowing you to see traffic lights, road markings, and hazards in their true colours. Highly recommended.
  • Brown/amber: Excellent for driving in variable light conditions. Brown lenses enhance contrast and depth perception, making them particularly good for overcast days or dawn/dusk driving. They do slightly warm colours.
  • Yellow/amber (light): Excellent for low-light and overcast conditions, enhancing contrast significantly. Not suitable for bright sunlight as they don't reduce brightness enough.
  • Green: Similar to grey in colour neutrality, with good contrast enhancement. A solid choice for driving.
  • Blue, red, or fashion tints: Not recommended for driving. These colours can distort traffic signal colours and reduce contrast in ways that compromise safety.

Lens Darkness: The Right Balance

Lens darkness is measured in categories:

  • Category 0-1: Very light tint, suitable for overcast conditions or indoor use. Not appropriate for driving in bright sunlight.
  • Category 2: Medium tint, suitable for variable light conditions and some driving situations.
  • Category 3: Standard sunglasses darkness. The most common choice for driving in normal to bright conditions. Recommended for most drivers.
  • Category 4: Very dark lenses. Not suitable for driving — they reduce light transmission too much for safe driving, particularly in tunnels or shaded areas.

Anti-Reflective Coating on the Back Surface

Light can reflect off the back surface of sunglass lenses into your eyes — particularly problematic when driving with the sun behind you. Quality driving sunglasses often include an anti-reflective coating on the back surface of the lens to eliminate this issue.

Frame Considerations for Driving

Fit and Stability

Sunglasses that slip or move while driving are a distraction and a safety hazard. Choose frames that fit securely without gripping uncomfortably. Lightweight frames with good nose pad grip are ideal for long drives.

Frame Coverage

Frames with slightly larger lenses provide better peripheral coverage, reducing glare from the sides. Wraparound styles offer maximum coverage but may not suit all face shapes or style preferences.

Temple Design

Thick or wide temples can create blind spots when checking mirrors. Choose frames with slim temples that don't obstruct peripheral vision.

Compatibility with Prescription

If you wear prescription glasses, you have several options for driving sunglasses: prescription sunglasses, clip-on lenses, or photochromic (transition) lenses that darken automatically in sunlight. Each has advantages depending on your lifestyle and budget.

What to Avoid

  • Very dark lenses (Category 4): Unsafe for driving
  • Fashion tints (blue, red, pink): Can distort colour perception of traffic signals
  • Ill-fitting frames: Distraction and safety hazard
  • No UV protection: Dark lenses without UV protection are worse than no sunglasses
  • Mirrored lenses without UV400: The mirror coating doesn't provide UV protection
